The Coatesville Area School District will be offering a summer school program beginning July 2nd and concluding on August 1st, 2013. Instruction will be delivered using the PLATO courseware; a cyber based learning system which affords the student the ability to learn from home. Students in grades sixth through twelve may participate in the program which will include daily interaction with highly qualified teachers via face to face time, email discussion, and phone. Three designated time slots are available: 8 am -11:30 am, 12 noon-3:30 pm, or 3:30 pm-7:00 pm and will be filled on a first come, first choice basis. Credit retrieval for a course that was not successfully completed during the school year, as well as original credit courses for enrichment are available.
For more information please review the summer school letter below. For registration information please review the attached form titled Summer School Registration Packet.
2013 Coatesville Area School District Summer School Registration Information
The Coatesville Area School District has implemented a summer reading list and assignment for all students entering grades 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. This program will enhance reading enjoyment by allowing students to read excellent literature at a more leisurely pace.
The links to the requirements and the summer reading assignment itself are broken down by grade at the bottom of the page.
You will also find a Reading Olympics list on the website for those students who are interested in getting started. Students may select a book from the Reading Olympics list as their student choice book. Books are available at local libraries or at local bookstores.
As an incentive for students to read over the summer months, a coupon will be given for each summer reading assignment completed and submitted on time and for each beyond the two required. This means that for each “Interacting with Text” packet a student turns in, including those beyond the required first two, s/he will receive a coupon to be placed in a prize drawing.
According to a study of the Pennsylvania Library Association, researchers found that students who read during the summer “are more likely to read at their grade level or above than their non-reading peers, and those reading above grade level are more likely to retain those skills into the next school year.”
The Coatesville Area School District English Language Arts Department appreciates your support in encouraging your child(ren) to read. It is our philosophy that students, teachers and parents must work together to build a community of readers.
Respectfully,
English Language Arts Department
